About the New Portfolio:

  1. Why is Gale retiring the Resource Center brand and concept?

    The Internet has changed the way people consume information online. Today’s learners expect their search experience to be more relevant, more engaging and more experiential. Gale’s new In Context learning environment is designed to meet these needs by transitioning from content-based interface design to providing a user experience which integrates content with engaging, highly-relevant and media-rich results delivered in context through Web-like portal pages.

    Direct feedback from users and study of how they were interacting with traditional research tools revealed that the relevancy of search results, in context, is valued more highly than the sheer number of results returned from a variety of sources. As a result, Gale, along with hundreds of subject-matter experts, identified the most relevant results as related to the curriculum, reduced the number of similar results from multiple sources, and ensured the currency of information — a process we call eliminating ROT, or the redundant, outdated and trivial.

  2. Which Resource Centers are being retired?

    Topical editions of the new product will replace the following Resource Center products:

    • Gale Biography in Context will replace Biography Resource Center, including African American and Lives & Perspectives modules adding 160,000 biographies never before available in Biography Resource Center
    • Gale U.S. History in Context and Gale World History in Context will replace History Resource Center — U.S. and World
    • Gale Opposing Viewpoints in Context will replace Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center and Critical Thinking Module
    • Gale Science in Context will replace Science Resource Center
    • Gale Student Resources in Context will replace Student Resource Center Gold, Silver, Bronze and College Editions and Health Module
    • Gale Canada in Context will replace Student Resource Center Canadian
  3. When will these new In Context online solutions be available? When will my current resources be retired?

    Current subscribers will be automatically upgraded to the new experience as soon as the products are released, starting in early August 2010.

  4. What does it mean that Gale In Context is a “portal product?”

    Portal products have two main benefits for users — particularly in regard to the delivery and relevancy of the information they provide.

    Portal products enhance the delivery of information — going beyond simple search and retrieval to providing context through comprehensive topic overviews and the integration of reference materials with journals, magazines, newspapers, images, video and other content formats to fully aid the discovery, evaluation and application of information. At launch, more than 1,800 portal pages will be available.

    Additionally, the reference content in your Resource Centers was updated as new editions of encyclopedias were published. The benefit of the portal-style products is that they are designed to be continuously updated to support the changing needs of our users based on market feedback, user-testing and to account for the expansion of content areas based on current events and other timely information.


  1. Is the content within the new In Context online solutions aligned to curriculum standards?

    Yes, content is aligned to U.S. national and state as well as international curriculum standards. These correlations can be turned off for Academic users.

  2. You mentioned eliminating the redundant, outdated or trivial content. Does that mean you’re providing less content to my users?

    Very little content was removed due to being redundant, outdated or trivial.  Content was only removed in circumstances where an overwhelming amount of content overshadowed more relevant information that would provide additional value to users.  The end result is a value-added content set more in line with the needs, expectations and desired results of end-users, with a focus on newly acquired multimedia.

  3. I understand Gale’s editors determine which content to feature on portal pages and review select content for relevancy — who are these editors and what does it mean that content is “hand-selected by experts?”

    Gale employs a large staff of experienced editors dedicated to ensuring the credibility, relevancy and currency of these resources. These editors collaborate with a network comprised of hundreds of contributors who are considered subject-matter experts in their respective fields to maintain the utmost authority across all products.


  1. Resource Centers offered tools like search tips, guided tours, how to cite a source, etc. Will these still be available and what additional tools are included?

    These tools, which support traditional research methods, will still exist. Additional tools include:

    • Search Assist and “Did You Mean?” tools promote efficient searching
    • Fact Boxes provide a snapshot summary of key information for quick review
    • Interactive maps, powered by Google, put research in an important geographical context
    • ReadSpeaker text-to-speech technology and the ability to adjust font size, available on every page, provide support for struggling readers and the visually impaired
    • Expert Picks feature resources hand-picked by hundreds of subject matter experts to aid discovery of new and related content
    • Document translator allows students to translate any document into French, Spanish, Japanese, German, Italian, Portuguese, simplified Chinese, and Korean
    • Customizable RSS feeds allow information to be automatically delivered to users
    • Web 2.0 sharing allows linking through hundreds of popular social networks and bookmarking tools
    • The ability to print, e-mail, download, and bookmark items allows students and educators to easily tailor information to their needs
    • Citation options supporting multiple formats including MLA7 and APA6
  2. Can users share information and collaborate on projects?

    Users can use the email and Web 2.0 tools to share information through a variety of channels.

  3. Will I be able to customize topics/topic lists like I have in the past?

    Browsable lists will be customizable similar to pick lists in the current Resource Centers.

  4. When releases/enhancements are rolled out to this new platform, how will that impact any customization I’ve already done?

    If you or your users have made a selection of documents, these will remain stagnant. If the user has created an RSS feed, the updates will continue to be automatic.

  5. Are these products compatible with other Gale resources through PowerSearch?

    The content in these products will be cross-searchable with content from your other Gale resources through Gale PowerSearch — this functionality will be available after an enhancement release scheduled for late 2010. The results displayed will be consistent with the user-experience provided by the PowerSearch interface.

    Our Biography, History and Science resources will become cross-searchable in the Gale PowerSearch interface for the first time as a result of these enhancements.

    Current subscribers to Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center and Student Resource Center, which were previously accessible through Gale PowerSearch, will be able to cross-search their In Context content in this way at launch. The usage from Gale PowerSearch will be listed under the Resource Center brand name in usage reports, as it always has. Additionally, statistics from those users accessing the new In Context versions directly will be available. This will be integrated at a future release.     This functionality is planned for a future release.

  6. Will the content in the In Context online solutions be accessible through federated search?

    Yes, meta search products will be able to access the content through Gale's PowerSearch experience.

  7. Will there be different default settings to make each product more relevant for my end-users?

    Yes. For example, an Academic Librarian may want to customize the news on their homepage, arrange the content-type buckets on their portal pages to highlight journal content and hide the curriculum standards.

  8. Will subject searching still be available?

    Yes. Subject searching will be available through Advanced Search.

Product Specific:

  1. I currently subscribe to Student Resource Center Bronze, Silver, Gold or College Edition; what is being added?

    These previous versions of Student Resource Center are being folded into Gale Student Resources in Context, which is the general reference student product based on the legacy version of Student Resource Center Gold and updated to include newly acquired content.

  2. What changes will impact my subscription to Student Resource Center Junior?

    Student Resource Center Jr. will not initially be available on the new platform. The new portfolio is launching with a focus on resources for high school and above.

  3. Is Student Resource Center Gold being enhanced for the rollout?

    In addition to the new user experience, current subscribers to Student Resource Center Gold will benefit from the newly acquired multimedia content.

  4. Will you identify the stance of “pro” and “con” articles in the Opposing Viewpoints edition?

    The "Expert Picks" portlet in Opposing Viewpoints will feature a mix of pro, con and neutral articles but without designation of the stance taken for each.  Although we have received some requests to clearly label articles with the corresponding stance, the majority of subscribers do not want this information provided to users, who often are required to determine the author’s point of view as part of their assignments.

  5. Is Opposing Viewpoints Critical Thinking being folded into the new Opposing Viewpoints edition?

    Critical Thinking will remain an add-on module and will release in late-2010 with added features to support classroom learning. Upon request, supplementary and extended trial access to the new Gale Opposing Viewpoints in Context experience will be made available to our Critical Thinking subscribers, so you and your users may begin to explore the new functionality.

  6. How will the later release of Opposing Viewpoints Critical Thinking impact my access to resources?

    Subscribers to Opposing Viewpoints Critical Thinking will remain on the Resource Center platform until the new product releases in late-2010. So you may begin to explore the new experience, we’re offering complimentary trial access to Gale Opposing Viewpoints in Context simultaneously for the duration of your Opposing Viewpoints Critical Thinking subscription. We will actively communicate with you about this opportunity as the migration approaches.

  7. How is the content available through the Health Module of my Student Resource Center subscription impacted by the migration?

    The health content has been integrated into Gale Student Resources in Context. It is no longer available as an add-on subscription.

  8. I own Biography Resource Center as an archive. How will this differ from the new Biography edition?

    Archive subscribers will benefit from accessing content through the new user interface.

About the Transition:

  1. How much does it cost to upgrade from my Resource Centers?

    Gale recognizes that the current economic realities make it challenging for you to afford to upgrade to this exciting new experience. However, as the industry leader, we must continue to innovate in order to meet the changing needs of today’s learners. Therefore, at this time, we’re pleased to offer you an upgrade at no increase to your current price.

    Affordable pricing options are available for new subscribers based on number of students or population served. Please contact your Gale Representative for a quote.

  2. How/when will I be notified of the upcoming changes to my resources?

    As we move closer to the upgrade, you will receive continued touch-points via phone and email, specific to your individual Resource Centers impacted by the launch of their new counterpart.

  3. Will there be Webinars so I can learn more?

    For an overview of the portfolio, view this on-demand presentation now. Additional on-demand presentations and live Webinars are available.

Technical Questions about Usage, Widgets, InfoMarks, etc.:

  1. How will usage be measured compared to my Resource Center(s)?

    Usage will still be measured using retrievals. The new user experience will provide much easier use and greater relevance allowing retrievals to increase as users more easily find the articles they desire.

    For subscribers to Gale Opposing Viewpoints in Context and Gale Student Resources in Context, usage will continue to be attributed to the Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center and Student Resource Center product names until a Gale PowerSearch enhancements release in the Fall.

    When comparing usage statistics from your Gale Opposing Viewpoints in Contenxt or Gale Student Resources in Context reports to previous reports available for your Resource Center products, you should notice an increase in retrievals along with a corresponding decline in searches as content in the In Context experience is much more easily discoverable through featured links and portal pages.

  2. Will year-over-year usage data be available showing usage on the old versus new experience?

    Year-over-year retrievals should increase as users have an easier time finding relevant information. You will still have access to historical usage reports for your Resource Centers.

  3. How will the installation of the In Context products work with the tools configured to support my Resource Center(s) (access URLs, search widgets, etc.)?
    • Start URLs?
      Gale will automatically redirect your existing access URL to the new product.
    • InfoMarks?
      InfoMarks linking to documents in Resource Centers will automatically be redirected to the same document in the new In Context environment. InfoMarks linking to search results will redirect to the homepage of the In Context resource with a prompt for the user to execute a new search.
    • Search Widgets?

      Users who enter a search term into your existing widget will automatically be directed to the new experience to view results. While your existing widgets will continue to work seamlessly, a new line of more sophisticated widgets is being created to support the new products. When it is convenient for you, you may want to install these new widgets.

      If you did not previously use search widgets, they're a great way to boost usage of your resources. Create new widgets for your In Context resources to help promote this exciting new tool to your user community.

    • Database Icons?
      Users who click existing database icons will automatically be linked into the new experience. Additionally, if your database icon link points to the images on Gale’s server, we will be able to “send” new artwork automatically to replace your existing icons. While the icons will continue to work seamlessly, if you downloaded the database icon to your own computer before uploading to your website, when it is convenient for you, you may want to upload a new image. We will notify you when new artwork is available.
    • My Current IT Config Settings?

      Your existing settings will automatically be applied to the new products. However, you may wish to make changes to new settings for features that did not exist in your Resource Center(s), like which news is featured on your homepage, or in which order content is displayed on a portal page.

      NOTE: For Academic customers who have used IT Config to disable the display of Lexile reading indicators in your legacy Resource Center products, you will temporarily see the Lexile icons in your new In Context resources. An enhancements release is planned for September, when the display of Lexile reading indicators will automatically turn back off. As long as you leave this setting in place, you will not have to select the customization again.

    • My Z39.50 connections?
      You will have the ability to link your new products to your catalog using Z39.50.
    • MARC Records?

      MARC Records are not available for portal products. Portal products are designed to provide highly topical, relevant and current information. As a result, content is selectively added from various publications. For example, to provide the most relevant results in the Science edition, you wouldn’t need to include every article from The New York Times—you would only want to provide the articles that pertain to recent scientific discoveries, changes to the NASA Constellation Program, or new data around the recent earthquake activities worldwide, etc. MARC Records link to an entire publication and since these subject-specific resources include only selected articles covering the topics identified by our expert advisory boards in each area, it wouldn’t set an accurate expectation with the catalog user to share the record to the entire publication.

      Additionally, generally speaking, MARC Records exist to support basic information retrieval – which is important and very necessary – especially in regard to our traditional databases like Academic OneFile or Gale Virtual Reference Library. However, the portal products are designed to support experienced-based learning that goes beyond delivering content. For these products, linking directly to content from a MARC record would in a way, undermine the value of the user-interface, richness of the multimedia content and contextual study that these resources have been created to provide.
