Find Information
Researching major historical events and periods
from ancient times to the present world is now easier than ever.
History Resource Center: World gives
researchers integrated access to a vast collection of information
not available in other resources. The database can be searched through
three main paths – detailed at left.
If both History Resource Center: US
and World are available to the student, a simple
click allows the student to search both databases.
Search Results come back organized according to
data type and extensively cross-referenced, allowing users to conduct
research in a very natural, associative manner.
Basic Search
A basic search is the default search in World. Students
may look for individual words or word strings to return myriad matching
results.
Person Search
Users can search the database for a specific person by specifying
name, profession, nationality, ethnicity, dates of birth and death,
birthplace and gender. Results show all persons available from the
database matching designated criteria.
Advanced Search
The advanced search combines the easy functionality of the keyword
search while allowing the user to narrow his target results by employing
search limiters such as time periods and publications.
Subject Search
With a subject search, students can enter a small term or phrase
and retrieve a thorough list of matching results.
Chronology Search
A clear and easy way to search is by using this visual timeline
to select a specific time period in world history. A brief synopsis
of this time is presented. Students may further narrow their period
search by entering a year, click on search and results will be returned
by source type.
Results Organization
A successful search returns a list of citations
for matching articles. Citations are brief references to articles,
displayed either from newest to oldest or, for relevance searches,
starting with the most relevant.
A summary of the search that produced the citation
list is displayed near the top of the page. Just below is an indication
of which citations are on the current page out of the total number.
The navigation icons on either side (repeated at the bottom of each
page) let you go forward or backward one page at a time or jump
to the first or last page.
