This database provides access to scholarly journals, news magazines,
and newspapers -- many with full-text and images.
Search 1:
A reference librarian from the Foothill College
Library wanted to know a good search strategy to use when looking
in Expanded Academic ASAP for full-text and peer-reviewed articles about the West
Nile Virus and horses.
Solution:
- Opened Expanded Academic ASAP and went into
the "Subject guide search" page.
- Checked the "to articles
with text" and "to peer reviewed publications" boxes.
- Entered "West Nile Virus"
and found that the preferred term was "West Nile Fever".
- Clicked on the "Search" link
in the left-side menu and enter the "Advanced search" page.
- Entered this search in the
first two entry boxes:
- Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "West Nile Fever".
- Selected "Key Word (ke)" and entered "horse*".
- Clicked on the "Search" button
and 10 journal articles matching the above criteria were retrieved.
Search 2:
A caller using Expanded Academic ASAP planning to attend a conference
in Toronto, Canada, in June 2003 wanted to read the latest full-text articles
he could find about the SARS outbreak there.
Solution:
- Opened Expanded Academic ASAP and entered the
"Subject guide search" page.
- Entered "SARS", clicked on the
"Search" button and found that the preferred termed was "Severe
Acute Respiratory Syndrome".
- Entered the "Advanced search"
page.
- Selected "Subject (su)" and entered
"Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome" in the entry box.
- Selected "Key Word (ke)" and entered
"Toronto".
- Checked the "to articles with
text" box and limited by date after 31 May 2003.
- Retrieved were 30 articles matching the requested
criteria.
Search 3:
A caller using Expanded Academic ASAP wanted to retrieve
some full-text aricles about life in Romania after the fall of Nicolae
Ceausescu.
Solution:
- Opened Expanded Academic ASAP and entered the "Subject guide search"
page.
- Entered "Ceausescu" and found that the preferred termed was "Nicolae Ceausescu".
- Entered "Romania" and found that the preferred termed was "Romania".
- Went to the "Advanced search" page.
- Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "Nicolae Ceausescu" in the first entry
box.
- Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "Romania" in the second entry box.
- Limted "to articles with text" by checking the corresponding box and by
date "after" 1 December 1989.
- Clicked on the "Search button and more than 40 articles matching the caller's
request were retrieved.
Search 4:
An e-mailer using Expanded Academic ASAP wanted to
know how to create a saved search that would retrieve full-text
political news articles from the state of Alaska from 2003 to the
present.
Solution:
- Opened Expanded Academic ASAP and went to the "Advanced search" page.
- Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "Alaska" in the first entry box.
- Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "politic*" in the second entry box.
- Checked the "to articles with text" box.
- Limited by date "after" 31 December 2002.
- Clicked the Search button and retrieved more than 10 articles that fulfilled
the e-mailer's request.
- Because the InfoMark feature is available in Expanded Academic ASAP,
all the e-mailer needed to do was highlight the URL in the browser address
box, copy it and place it wherever desired (i.e. as a link on a web page,
as a favorite in the Internet Explorer browser, or as a bookmark in the Netscape
browser).
Search 5:
A graduate student doing research on the democracy movement in Myanmar and its central figure Aung San Suu Kyi wanted to retrieve full-text articles related to this subject in Expanded Academic ASAP.
Solution:
- Opened Expanded Academic ASAP and went to the "Advanced search" page.
- Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "Myanmar" in the first entry box.
- Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "democracy" in the second entry box.
- Selected "Subject (su)" and entered "Aung San Suu Kyi" in the third entry box.
- Checked the "to articles with text" box.
- Clicked on the "Search" button and retrieved more than 20 articles matching the graduate student's request.
