Finding Information
Searching 40 million articles of text would have been impossible for any individual until the creation of Gale Digital Collections. Employing the dynamic Gale search functionality that librarians and their patrons worldwide have come to trust — and new technology that identifies subtle differences in the actual text as it appeared in the original documents — our newest online reference collection allows researchers to find books, text and authors more quickly and accurately. Just as the nineteenth century redefined how newspapers were received and studied, 19th Century British Library Newspapers redefines how researchers access a century of the most influential news stories ever printed.
Searching
Basic Search
The Basic Search is the broadest type of search and often returns the most results.
This allows users to search on either Keyword or Entire Document (full-text) and to narrow their search by using either or both of the following limiters:
- Date of publication
- Publication Title
Advanced Search
The Advanced Search, with Boolean functionality, allows researchers to combine or exclude search terms such as Keyword, Entire Document, Document Title or Publication Title, users can pinpoint their searches and have more targeted results than a Basic Search.
A "fuzzy search" option expands the search to include words similar to search terms entered, thereby accommodating for spelling variations. Think of a fuzzy search in terms of how similar one word is to another. To change a word into another characters can be added, deleted or replaced. A single degree is one change to one character. Two degree is changes to two characters, and so on up to four. The higher the degree, the greater margin of error, presenting the researcher with more results.
Advanced Search allows users to limit their search by entering any or all of the following limiters:
- Date of publication
- Publication Title
- Place of Publication
- Publication Section
- Publication Frequency
- Language
- Documents with Images
Search Results
All matching search results are returned as citations. Citations are presented 20 to a page (depending on preference). The total number of citations (results) is noted at the top of page.
Researchers may click on the citation title to access the corresponding article, or click on the links below the citation to be taken to the full page view, the About this Publication page, or to a Browse Issue view that permits reading the full issue page after page. Digital facsimiles of the specific article or corresponding full page are presented and may be viewed on screen, saved (or marked) for later reference, printed or bookmarked for future use such as reading lists or directing other researchers to this search.
