Finding Information

The Times Digital Archive's convenient, customizable interface offers precise full-text searching and hit-term highlighting. Researchers can quickly — and successfully — retrieve the full-text image of a specific article, advertisement, or the entire page on which it appears.

Advanced searching allows users to search by issue date, article title, byline or article category.

A unique browse feature allows users to select a specific date and then browse the pages from that issue via thumbnail images that users can use to weigh the importance of search results before selecting an article image to view.

Searching

KEYWORD

Searches every word that appears in The Times Digital Archive based upon the user's selection criteria. This includes advertising as well as individual news articles. Searching The Times Digital Archive with a Keyword search is fast, simple and returns a great number of results.

ADVANCED
An Advanced search in The Times Digital Archive incorporates the use of Boolean search dynamics — allowing researchers to combine or exclude search terms, authors, images and more. Advanced searches also allow the user to specify a lower level of search terms to increase the number of potential results.

BROWSE
Browsing The Times Digital Archive is as simple as entering a desired date in history. Results will be presented by an image of each page of that day's The Times and all articles and advertisements.

RELEVANCE
The Times Digital Archive
offers users this option, which works as easily as a Keyword search. Results are returned based upon a sophisticated algorithm that weighs the value of the matching term based upon its appearance in the title, sub-title and article.

Search Results

Each search returns a list of those articles that match your inquiry. Search results are presented in reverse chronological order by date; or relevance from a relevance search. Article categories are also returned, allowing users to narrow the results list by article category. A click on the article selected — or full page on which it appears — allows researchers to view a facsimile of the actual article as published in The Times.
