Searching

Researchers may search through 200,000 pages of documents quickly and easily thanks to the power of the Internet. Users can employ a variety of searches including keyword, full text or subject search to access the information they seek in a fraction of the time previously spent on the research phase.

This search allows users to search the entire database for the presence of their desired term or terms from the full text of the database’s contents. Users may limit their search by Government Office by selecting:

By using the Fuzzy Search functionality, results also will include near matches of the desired term(s). This is especially helpful to maximize results that may otherwise be overlooked due to variances in spelling between either time periods or place of publication (e.g. harbor, harbour).

Browse Indexes
When a researcher employs this search, an alphabetical list of topics is presented. A click on the desired selection returns all the works in the database attributed to that entry. Users can choose from subjects in the following six indexes:

Search Results

Search results are presented as a list. A brief citation is provided for each item within a results list. Each brief citation includes Section, Heading, Date (when known), Title and Document Reference Number. Clicking on the work's title in the citation will take the researcher directly to the facsimile image of the first document in the file containing your search term.

The user can navigate to previous and next page of the results list, use the arrows to the left and right of results list page numbers located above and below the results list display. Once viewing a certain file, the user will find the list of pages containing their search term in the box to the left. This box also contains navigation tools to enable the user to scroll from page to page, jump to the title page or a selected page number, maginify or reduce the page size. Pages or files can be marked for future use (course packs or reading lists). Up to 10 pages of the file can be printed or saved as a pdf file at a time. Please consult the HELP file for any further assistance on navigating this archive.
